When Kangaroo Island Spirits asked us to help shape their first ever whisky, we knew this was not a story to build from a distance. Before anything was defined, we went to Kangaroo Island to meet the people behind it.

Overview

From the outset, it was clear that this whisky was being driven by conviction. The distiller and the Kangaroo Island Spirits team were not interested in replicating tradition or borrowing from the old world. They were determined to make a whisky on their own terms, from their own place, and with a clear belief in doing things differently.

That spirit has always defined Kangaroo Island Spirits. Established in 2006 with a vision to produce world-class gin, the business has built its reputation by doing things its own way. Whisky was not a departure from that ethos, but a natural next chapter. The same curiosity, independence, and refusal to follow convention that shaped the distillery from the beginning now sits at the centre of its whisky story.

In a category often dominated by heritage, rules, and established ideas about where and how whisky should be made, Kangaroo Island Spirits brought a more instinctive and exploratory mindset. The team was not looking for permission from the whisky establishment. They backed the idea of making whisky in a place others might question, driven by belief, craft and a willingness to say yes where others may have said no.

That became the strategic heart of the brand. Through a focused process, we gave that mindset a clear articulation: Whisky from a different point of view. More than a line, it became the principle that shaped every decision across story, structure, tone, and design.

Kangaroo Island plays a vital role, but as the force that shapes the whisky rather than the sole driver of the brand. Its temperate Southern Ocean summers and mild island winters create gentle, consistent conditions for maturation, helping deliver balanced flavour extraction from the cask and a refined depth of complexity. This climate influence is fundamental to the character of the spirit and gives the whisky a profile distinctly of its place.

That sense of place is reinforced by the island’s culture of making. Kangaroo Island is home to a community of producers and artisans who bring care, grit, and craft to what they do. That same character runs through the distillery and through the distiller’s approach to whisky making. It is serious in its standards but independent in its attitude, shaped less by ceremony and more by conviction.

With the strategy clearly defined, the next challenge was to translate that point of view into a physical brand expression. The Kangaroo Island Single Malt Whisky range was designed to deliver strong shelf presence, premium gifting appeal, and a clear sense of provenance, while staying true to the people and philosophy behind it.

A sophisticated dip bottle and precision screen printing give the range a distinctive presence within the Australian whisky category. Abstract illustrations inspired by the island’s shifting skies, rugged coastline and wild climate bring narrative depth to the pack, but they do so in service of a bigger story: a whisky made by people willing to back themselves and chart their own course.

On the reverse, the story continues across the full bottle surface, with artwork wrapping seamlessly around the form to deepen the connection between people, place, and spirit. Mandatory information is integrated with precision, meeting category requirements while preserving the integrity of the bottle as a crafted object.

At the centre of it all is the distiller, shaped by instinct, experience and a desire to do things differently. From cask selection to the rhythms of island life, the approach follows character rather than formula. The result is a whisky that feels premium without pretence, crafted to be shared rather than staged.

Beyond the bottle, Fluid developed and delivered a suite of complementary brand assets across launch, trade, gifting, training, video, and digital touchpoints. Each expression was designed to work as part of one cohesive system, ensuring the brand remained consistent, distinctive, and recognisable wherever it appeared.

This was a brand built around people first, then shaped by place. The conviction came from the distiller and the Kangaroo Island Spirits team. Kangaroo Island gave that conviction its texture, climate, and edge. Together, they created a whisky with a clear and ownable point of view.

Outcome:

Fluid helped launch Kangaroo Island Spirits’ first ever whisky with a strategy-led brand built around independence, conviction, and provenance. The result is a premium whisky identity with strong shelf impact, compelling gifting appeal and a distinctive point of view grounded in both maker and place.
