Inspiring Library Signage

The Bentleigh Library and Youth Hub was opened by Glen Eira Libraries to provide safe, welcoming and accessible library and youth services for the community.

Overview

The City of Glen Eira engaged Fluid to transform the Bentleigh Library into a modern community centre, integrating the Council’s Youth Services. The project, known as the Bentleigh Library & Youth Hub, presented a unique challenge: incorporating three distinct brands—Glen Eira City Council, Glen Eira Libraries, and Glen Eira Youth Services—into cohesive signage for both internal and external uses. This included wayfinding, murals, and a variety of signage formats.

The newly designed multipurpose space provided a wide range of services, youth programs, and community events, making it accessible to all members of the community. It featured innovative facilities such as flexible programming spaces, independent study areas, a teen lounge, an extensive library, and a recording and editing suite.

Fluid navigated the complexities of blending the brand guidelines for all three stakeholders, developing a brand architecture that clarified which services each brand represented. Collaborating with stakeholders, Fluid explored various scenarios to document design solutions that were functional and visually coherent. To improve the flow of foot traffic for both staff and visitors, Fluid considered and mapped multiple scenarios and designed effective wayfinding signage that enhanced the usability and accessibility of the space.

For the new courtyard, Fluid commissioned Melbourne artist Brolga and traditional signwriters Killing Time Studio to create a custom mural, symbolising the discoveries that could be made at the Hub – such as reading, video production, gaming, science exploration, and artistic creation. The mural was co-created with input from the Youth Services group, while Fluid also developed illuminated building name signage for the exterior.

Through multiple on-site audits, stakeholder interviews, and collaboration with architects, contractors, and manufacturers, Fluid provided creative, tailored visual renders and prototypes of all signage. The new Bentleigh Library & Youth Hub officially opened in October 2022, receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback from the community. The project set a new standard for future city assets in Glen Eira.
