Background

Deakin Universities Vacant Geelong Project is an academic study and creative response to the regions changing relationship with the architectural built environment that helped form Geelong’s identity. With many of these post-boom time industrial sites left to ruin, Vacant Geelong asks the question, what do these abandoned built relics say about our past and how can we contextualise these so future generations can learn from their existence and respond in new and creative ways in a post-industrial time.

Challenge

Fluid was engaged to partner closely with the Vacant Geelong Project team including, Dr. Mirjana Lozanovska, Dr. David Beynon from Deakin University School of Architecture and Built Environment, along with the National Wool Museum Director Padric Fisher and lead curator Georgia Melville. The Vacant Geelong, Iconic Industries Project was multi-phased. Phase 1 was to plan and facilitate an exhibition of Deakin Masters of Architecture student work held at the museum.

Students were asked to respond to two components in the conceptual framework of the brief. Firstly, to consider what does ‘vacancy’ mean, in the context of post-industrial Geelong – considering buildings, land, and sites. And secondly, for another group of third-year students to specifically present their findings on the role of the Ford Motor Company in shaping the region from 1925 early beginning in the 1920s to the heyday of production in the 1960s up until the closure of the facility in recent times.

Solution

The solution for the Iconic Industries Vacant Geelong project was multi-phased. In part, it was an exhibition and celebration of student works as well as the active marketing of the event. Post opening night launch a book was designed to capture and document the student’s interpretation of the project brief.

Outcome

The response to the exhibition was positive and a large group attended the opening night launch party. The presentation of the key branded elements was well received and the limited edition book was well prescribed and purchased post-event
