Since its inception in 1985 at South Melbourne Market, Black Swan has been fuelled by a love for the fresh, quality ingredients that you can grab-and-go from the market. This passion remains at the heart of their new product developments.

Overview

Recognising the potential for growth in the snacking dip segment, Monde Nissin sought to expand its Black Swan ‘Favourites’ range with an innovative new grab-and-go offering. Monde Nissin challenged Fluid to introduce a selection of popular dip variants—such as Hommus, Spring Onion, and Tzatziki —in convenient 70g packs. Unlike competitors who offer single SKU multi-packs, Black Swan’s offer would allow shoppers to create personalised bundles catering to individual tastes and consumption preferences, allowing customers to purchase multiple single-serve packs at a discount.

Targeting routine dip shoppers looking for convenient, portion-controlled options for lunchtime snacks or quick meals, Fluid designed the range to appeal to families with varied taste preferences. Customers could buy a variety of dip flavours in smaller, individualised portions. In an effort to reduce waste and simplify the design, Fluid created lid designs that would be printed directly onto the foil, allowing for simplified pack designs that would keep packaging to a minimum.

Understanding shopper insights was crucial. Notably, one in three dip shoppers use dips beyond traditional dipping occasions, incorporating them into sandwiches, wraps, or as a condiment like aioli for chips. This highlighted the product’s potential versatility, positioning it not just as a snack but also as a meal enhancer. The primary consumption occasion was during the afternoon, with 66% of shoppers enjoying dips with crackers or veggies as a snack to tide them over until dinner. The second most common use is during lunch, where dips are often used as an ingredient in sandwiches or wraps, providing added flavour and convenience.

The new product positioned Black Swan to meet the evolving needs of modern consumers, tapping into emerging trends of convenience, customisation, and versatility while reinforcing its brand presence in the expanding grab-and-go dip segment.
